Very early he decided his father hated him because he wanted to make his younger sister the next chief of the Zottos, which would have been his to claim, and because he never showed any warmth or affection to his son. The rest of the Clan looked upon him with distrust, thinking that his beautiful features hid something deeper, that he was scheming some sort of rebellion against the patriarch, but, if they were right, he never made his plans reality. One day, the Clan left to go pillage, but never returned. When he noticed his father and sister were missing, Merlein set out to find them. On the way, he helped rescue a boat from Mariyamu Kingdom, on which was the Royal Princess Irina with whom he became acquainted. Taken by her at first sight, and feeling compassion at her plight, he decided to escort her until she found what she was looking for, that is Hirumes, his father's enemy. Later, he was to meet up again with his sister, take command of the Zotto Clan, and help Prince Arslan as one of his companions.
