From Some Bygone Heroic Age

released by: cynfeirdd

I drew inspiration from certain passages I was rereading in James Joyce’s “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” and some inspiration simply from the sound material I was working with. It was my intention to stylistically evoke a sort of musical grand-epic, perhaps with musical flavorings of a Cecil B. DeMille film or certain moments of an old silent film by Fritz Lang, F. W. Murnau or someone similar: melodramatic, grandiose and even a bit “campy” in places depending on how you look at it (or rather listen to it.)

Sound sources used in this recording:

Some of the material I recorded in the warehouse next to where I work: such as contact mic’d chain-link fence and gate, contact mic’d metal support beams. Some material was contact mic’d and prepared piano. And the remainder of the material was miscellaneous found/stolen sound snippets from various recordings: everything from Richard Wagner (and Richard Strauss) to Billie Holiday.

Listen to a sample from Track 2: The Ballad of Bold Phelim Brady (and Rome that burned as Nero Sang)
