The Patchwork Piano
Released on genesungswerk, this work is a series of 14 improvised and processed pieces for piano and prepared piano, first improvised, then cut and pasted and reworked in a "patchwork" or collage style, jumps and transitions in some places quite abrupt, other places subtle. Some pieces are completely collaged and others almost unmodified except for noise reduction and some EQ adjustments.
But don't let the statement about noise reduction mislead you. Some of these pieces are very "noisy," and distorted, maxing out even in places. Recording quality is "poor" someone once told me. Well, yes maybe, by more traditional recording standards. But then think of Van-Gogh who globbed paint on the canvas like he didn't know what he was doing, right? No technique, right? No sense of delicacy! No proper sense of color or lighting! The brute! The ignoramus! Like some kindergardener doing his first painting, right? And once there was a man who walked into a french restaurant, that was supposedly very upscale, and ordered something he'd heard was good and turned out to be appauled when the waiter brought it out to him. This was supposed to be an upscale restaurant. Did they have no cleanliness standards here?! The waiter, noticing his distress, asked, "Is something amiss, monsieur?" "Yes! Don't you see it!" "See what, monsieur?" "Dammit man! Have you no eyes?! --- There are SNAILS on my plate!!"
