Phillip Miles Bryson
Musical
Background
I studied music composition at Arizona State
University, as a graduate student. My teachers were Chinary Ung
and Randal Shinn. I do not teach or even have a degree in music
composition, however, but in Computer Information Systems, and I
work full-time as a computer operator/programmer.
What
Type of Music I Make
The type of music I have been making has been derived from live
improvisations, found sounds and field recordings, all assembled
into sound pieces, "musique concrete" if you prefer.
Though I have collaborated with people in the past, composed for
ensembles, orchestra, etc., all my recent CDR projects have been
solo efforts.
Musical Tastes (and possible
influences on my own style of composition)
Eclectic. I like just about anything unusual in just about any
category, though these days I've been listening mostly to people
like: Hands To, id battery, Ned Bhoulassa, Thomas Dimuzio, Aube,
Nurse With Wound, Dead Voices on Air, (and DVOA related - Rapoon,
Propeller, zoviet france, etc.), Ellen Fullman, Deep Listening,
David Hykes, Asmus Tietchens, John Hudak, Robert Ruttman
and those are just a very few.
Others (perhaps a little better known) I admire: Toru Takemitsu,
George Crumb, John Zorn, Jaco Pastorius, Glenn Branca, Arvo Part,
Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Hildegard von Bingen, Donald
Fagen, Steely Dan, Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, Sergei
Rachmaninov, Igor Stravinsky (of course!), Pink Floyd, Primus,
Mr. Bungle, Ned Rorem, Aaron Copeland, Paul Bowles, Jon Hassel,
LaMonte Young,
and I could name many more, but I think you
probably get the idea. My tastes are diverse.
