Chapter 24
Justice is Mine

My dreams were peculiar and vivid. I thought I saw someone trying to wake me. They were yelling nonsense and shaking my shoulders. I tried to open my mouth to tell them to stop, but it was sealed shut. Eventually the shouting stopped and my dreams discontinued momentarily. I then had a dream where I was being jerked around, first by my arms and then my legs. Lastly I was in a large room with a fan next to me. It was blowing cool air on my face and I was getting cold. I tried to bring my hand up to my cheek to warm it up but I couldn't move. I tried everything and seemed to be paralysed everywhere but my eyes. All I could see was a bit of the fan next to me and the ceiling. I let out a sigh and closed my eyes.
They were jerked open gently by someone's fingers. "Andrea?" a voice said, rather closely.
"Mmm," I managed to groan from the bases of my throat.
"Be careful with her! They gave her a tranquillizer and it's pretty strong stuff. . ." I couldn't make out the rest, it was a series of low mumbles. ". . she probably has no control of her body whatsoever."
"How long will it last?" asked the first voice, which had now become even closer. It was nearly right in my ear, and although it was loud it did not bother me.
"I'm not sure, when they used it on Johnny it was only two hours, but he's a big, muscled teenage guy. Not a young woman. Even if Andrea is strong, it will probably last around four or five hours for her. But who knows how long ago they used it on her."
So they were talking about me? The voices weren't familiar.  They both had the same tone and spoke at the same speed.
"You didn't hear it, but I still swear I could hear her yelling my name three and a half hours ago." said the louder voice.
I tried to remember back that far, I did yell something, but what was it? My memory was blurred and it hurt to think. What did it matter, it was only some weird dream anyway. I stopped listening to the conversation between the two voices and blacked out again.
I awoke with a searing head ache. My entire body was sore and when I tried to move my arms and legs, they screamed with pain.
"Okay, Andrea, just work it out." I told myself. "Just like a charlie horse." I ignored the pain in my arms and legs and began swinging them back and forth, like making a snow angel. After a few minutes they didn't hurt and I tried moving them up and down. A new series of pain began and I did the same thing in a different direction. While I did my exercises for the rest of my joints, I tried to unveil the meanings of my dreams. Whom did the voices belong to? A computer maybe? One of those droids that let us to the castle way back in the beginning? The thought of the droid and the adventure Frederick and I had following it around sent a wave of nostalgia across my mind. We were so unconcerned back then. It seemed like ages ago, but who knew how long ago it really was? I missed Frederick and sighed out his name.
"Andrea?" came the far off reply. I recognized the voice.  It was the one in my dream.
No, no. I thought. It can't be, it's just my mind playing tricks on me. Whatever that girl gave me has messed up my body's signals.
"Andrea!" but there it was again, it was the person from my dream, and he was calling my name.
I could hear running footsteps and eventually they were right next to my head. The "crack" of someone's knee cap echoed as they knelt down next to me. Their hands lightly grabbed my shoulders and sat me upright. The smell of grape bubble bath entered my nostrils as my sense of smell came roaring back. I sighed and inhaled deeply.
"Can you open your eyes?" asked the voice. I tried to figure out if it had been the loud voice or the farther off voice from my dream. It was hopeless.  Both voices were identical.
I hadn't opened my eyes in a while, and slowly I tried to lift my eye lids. They felt as thought they weighed hundreds of pounds but I managed to open them. The room was dark and my eyes adjusted to the blackness. I turned my head to see Frederick, smiling worriedly at me.
"Are you feeling okay?" he asked, panic-stricken.
The voice I'd been hearing was his! How could that be? He didn't have a mono-toned voice at all, he nearly sang every sentence he spoke.
"What?" I asked. My lips were chapped and my throat was dry. My voice however, sounded exactly like Fredericks.
"How are you feeling? Alex said you'd probably have some pain throughout your body, and you'd be hungry, so I brought you this." He handed me a plate of cheese and crackers.
This must be a dream.  There's no way Frederick can be here. He's locked up in a closet. I thought this was the cruelest dream yet. With Frederick and some real food. I knew that when I went to take a bite of the cracker, I would wake up, the dream would be over and I'd be hungry. None the less, I reached out and picked one up. I brought it to my mouth and quickly took a bite. The rich flavour filled my mouth and the cheese melted on my tongue. I shoved the rest of it in my mouth and swallowed it. I devoured the rest of the plate and let out a moan of satisfaction. So the food had been real, excellent. But what about Frederick, was he real too? I reached out to him and he leaned closer so I could touch his cheek. So far, so good. He stretched out his arms and wrapped them around my waist. I inched closer and sat next to him. He unhooked one of his arms and ran his hand through my hair. Then he pulled my head closer and I laid it on his shoulder. This couldn't be a dream. It was too real. Although I had lost pretty much all sense of what was reality or just an illusion.
Frederick shifted position and reached behind him. "Oh yeah, I got you some water too. Here, drink it up."
I reached out for it and guzzled the whole thing. It was ice cold and felt very good on my throat. Frederick laughed at me as I swallowed the water and when I looked up in his eyes, he just met them with an amused expression.
