I cried out his name one last time then sat there, bawling my eyes out.
My body went into convulsions as the tears came. I sobbed and fell to the
ground. I couldn't see anything anymore so I closed my eyes and buried
them in my arm. I was overwhelmed with sadness and confusion. When I finally
stopped crying and removed my head from my arms, I could see a bit of light.
I turned my head around and then I could see even more light. I spun my
body around to discovere a familiar site. An ugly shag green carpet was
underneath me and there was a wooden bed over my head. I heard a noise
and then I saw feet enter the room.
"Andrea?" she called out. The feet came over to the bed and she
peered underneath the slip. She coughed as some dust emerged. "What on
Earth are you doing under there?"
I looked up at my mother and tried to come up with an excuse.
She examined my red, puffy face and asked if I had been crying.
"Of course not!" I said.
"C'mon," she said "I'll help you get out of there." she reached
under to pull me out but then stopped when she noticed something behind
me. I turned around to see what had gotten her so excited. There, at my
feet, all in one piece, was the rubber duck. I gasped and she reached under
the bed to grab it. She took it out and held it up to her face. Examining
it closely she sighed.
"I thought I'd gotten rid of this thing for good." she said.
She turned and looked at me. "It was your grandmothers. I found it in her
attic and when I asked her about she became very upset. Spewing off a bunch
of crazy non-sense. I could have sworn I threw it out after that."
I jumped out from under the bed. "What? What was she saying?"
I asked.
"Oh, nothing important dear, don't worry about it." With that
she left the room.
I decided to let her go. I didn't actually want the duck back
or anything. I looked down at myself. I was no longer wearing the beat
up clothes I had on before. My new jeans were in perfect condition again.
A sudden wave of dizziness swept over me and I sat on the bed. I needed
to clear my head. I grabbed my coat and left the house. I headed for the
park, figuring some nice fresh air and flowers would help. As I walked
around the public gardens, smelling the flowers along the way, I noticed
a couple on one of the benches. They looked familiar so I went in for a
closer look. As I approached them I was able to confirm that is was, indeed,
Stephanie and Alex! I ran up to them and smiled. They returned the smile
but they were not friendly ones. More like smiles out of kindness.
"Excuse me," I said. "But you two look familiar, have we met?"
Stephanie looked me up and down, then smiled. "Yeah, you do look
a bit familiar, but I can't quite place my finger on it." I sighed when
I realised that she didn't remember. "Do you want some popcorn?" she offered.
Alex held out the bag the two of them had been sharing and I took some.
"Were you ever in a soccer camp?" Stephanie asked.
"Yeah, I was!" I exclaimed.
"That must be it then!" Stephanie said.
"Yeah, I guess so."
Stephanie smiled and Alex offered some more popcorn.
"Thanks," I said, with my mouth half full. "Well, nice seeing
you, I'd better get going."
"Bye!" said Steph and Alex.
"See ya," I mumbled.
My mind raced with thoughts. Steph and Alex, here, with me! Well
the past month certainly couldn't have been a dream, coincidences like
that just don't happen! Yet Alex and Steph remembered nothing. I wondered
about Frederick. Maybe I'd see him again someday, but would we get together?
What if the only reason we had worked so well the first time was because
of what we'd been through? Then an even worse thought hit me. What if Frederick
had been a figment of my imagination? Certainly no guy could be that perfect,
I must have made him up. I pushed the thought from my mind. No, it was
too real, it was all to real. No dream had ever been like that. He had
to be real.
My pace quickened as I walked along and I didn't notice where
I was going. I would have walked right into a small pond if someone hadn't
grabbed me from behind.
"You know, there's a reason for those small fences around the
path!" laughed a voice. I spun around to stare into Frederick's blue eyes.
He instantly stopped laughing and stared at me in shock. I searched him
up and down with my eyes, tyring to decide weather or not he was real.
I reached out and grabbed on to his arm. Solid. My eyes met his and we
both exchanged intense glances. I tried to figure out if he remembered.
He was looking deep inside my eyes too and I could almost feel him inside
my head. Then he found his voice and spoke.
"Andrea?" he asked in a soft, confused, and hopeful voice.
He remembered! "Frederick!" I cried out and leapt into his arms.
I hugged him as tightly as I could. He had other ideas and gently but forcefully
pulled my chin up to meet his. With one swift move he immersed me with
another one of his wonderful kisses.
