SHADES OF GRAY

Chapter 2
Nikita had spotted Gray sitting on a park
bench making sketches of the building directly across the street. At first,
she couldn't believe her eyes. She couldn't run over to him to get a closer
look. After all, she was there, on assignment, leaning against a tree,
waiting for her contact. Gerig Topher was a chemist with a conscience,
who had unwittingly gone to work for an international terrorist organization.
The organization had hidden behind a well-known pharmaceutical company
and had taken over labs and plants around the world. Now they were up to
something and Section wanted to know what. For his freedom and a ticket
to anonymity, Topher had agreed to give Section information on the League's
new biological research.
It looked like Topher wasn't going to show.
He was nowhere in sight and Nikita was restless. Her backup was bored as
well and urged her to call the whole thing off. As Nikita turned to the
bench where Gray had been sitting, a rollerblader ran into her, knocking
her over. The kid kept going, not even looking back to assess the damage
he'd done. Nikita sat for a moment, legs outstretched, shaking her head.
Birkoff, who had been monitoring the situation, checked to see whether
or not she was ok. "I'm fine, Birkoff. What was that?" "Don't
know, Nikita. Maybe, just a clumsy kid." "Maybe not. Check him
out." "I'm on it." Operations took over. "Nikita, report
back here in fifteen for debriefing."
"Nikita? I thought it was you. You look
great." "Gray...what are you doing here?" He helped her
up from the ground. The touch of his hands brought back a flood of good
memories. "I could ask you the same thing." They smiled at one
another, remembering. Then his handsome face clouded over as he recalled
their last day together. She had told him that she didn't love him. He
withdrew his hand from hers and backed away.
