Montmartre

Upon descending the metro train, one has to be physically fit in order to endure the flights of steps that will lead you up to the green wrought-iron arches and amber lights of the Abbesses metro station. Designed by the architect Hector Guimard, it is one of the few original Art Nouveau stations in Paris.

Located at 19 des Abbesses 75018, the St-Jean l'Evangliste de Montmartre was the first to be built from concrete. The interior, with its flower motifs, are typical of the Art Nouveau style. While its interlocking arches suggest Islamic architecture. The red-brick facing has earned it the nickname St-Jean-des-Brisques. It was designed by Anatole de Baudot and was completed in 1904.
