X-Wing Vs Tie Fighter
Metro Games/Lucasarts
X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is a great game that keeps the tradition of TIE Fighter and X-Wing
(both originally published by LucasArts). The graphics are out of this world and the
options for control are nothing short of phenomenal. I have lost many a night's sleep to
the Evil Galactic Empire trying to use the Force against them. I am good, but I am not a
Jedi yet....
Beginners to the saga of the LucasArts' Star Wars flight simulators will find the
keystrokes confusing and a bit daunting at first. Keep at it! It will come naturally to
you after you've played a few times. Until then, keep your keyboard reference handy and
play some of the easier missions until you're comfortable. Even after the numerous hours I
have logged in on TIE Fighter, I still needed re-training on the new systems.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that LucasArts had done away with the MIDI and FM music
and replaced it with good ol' CD audio. The music in the middle of a dogfight just makes
the atmosphere all the more exciting.
There are only a few drawbacks to this otherwise excellent game. The biggest flaw is the
speed over the modem play. At a 28800 BPS, the game is playable (and still pretty good)
when playing modem to modem. However, if you strap on a 28800 and head to the 'net, it's a
whole new galaxy of worms. The gameplay is mostly sluggish at best. Sometimes you will
find a player whose ping time (see the orange booklet that came with the game) is under
200. Then you're in for a real game. Until LucasArts releases a patch or unless you have
at least a 33600 modem, I'd recommend just sticking to network or modem-to-modem play.
This leads to another drawback. There is a certain lack of single player missions.
Multiplayer support was nice, but, there are people that want a good game and storyline
with nice cutscenes such as the epic that was created with TIE Fighter.
The last fault is that there should be more ships to pilot! What happened to B-Wings and
TIE Defenders? You can't claim they didn't exist because I, along with thousands of other
gamers, saw them. Bring them back... please!
X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is a masterpiece despite these (somewhat) minor flaws. I certainly
can attest to the addictiveness of this game. Go, run, walk, swim, just get it now. It's
sure to be another classic LucasArts title that will be on the computers of future
generations.
