Wentworth By The Sea
WENTWORTH BY-THE-SEA
From the Smithsonian Magazine "Most Endangered Historic Places in America" list:
"For well over a century, the turreted silhouette of the once-grand Wentworth By The Sea Hotel has dominated the shoreline of New Castle, New Hampshire. In its prime, this sprawling, wood-frame Victorian resort, built in the 1870s, offered guests amenities such as tennis, golf and a saltwater pool. A favorite destination for American families, the retreat played host as well to film stars and Presidents. In 1905, it housed the delegates to the history-making negotiations that ended the Russo-Japanese War."
Time nearly ran out for the Wentworth. Closed since the early 1980s, the hotel was facing demolition, but, after years of wrangling and argument between owners, potential buyers and the residents of New Castle, it is now in the process of being restored to it's original grandeur and purpose. Ocean Properties, a Portsmouth, NH company plans to re-open the 1874 hotel by Spring 2003 if they can make their way past the many obstacles with which this project seems to be perpetually plagued.
NEW! - The Wentworth By The Sea Resort has reopened! The restoration complete, the new Marriott owned Wentworth property has been saved. You can visit their website at http://www.wentworth.com to make reservations.
Although it doesn't qualify as Vanished History any more, the Wentworth will remain on the website as an example of a successful historic preservation effort and also because, frankly, I think it's too beautiful to take down!
