Real vs. Virtual Museums

Most museum professionals like to distinguish between "real" and "virtual" museums. Basically, a real museum is considered to possess physical artifacts and a building in which to display them. Purely virtual museums, however, are typically web sites which mimic a real museum yet lack physical artifacts. This can be a rather fuzzy distinction; as in the case of a virtual photo gallery or a virtual software museum. Yet the spirit of these definitions remains and continues to be a subject of some debate.

With this distinction in mind, The Lost Museum of Sciences is clearly not a real museum. In fact, this site is only a virtual museum in the loosest sense of the term. It is perhaps most accurate to call this web site a guide since it is mostly composed of URLs. The site could only be considered a virtual museum if its pages could be considered some form of exhibit. As the site continues to develop, I leave you to make your own distinctions.
