            Characters in Play

            1. Erik, the Phantom of the Opera
Age: Undetermined. Past 40, but it isn't readily apparent.
              Hair/Eyes: Grey/Brown
Height/Weight: 6' or taller, enough to be imposing, and his weight is also undetermined, but it is little enough that he appears almost skeletal.
              Position: Opera Ghost
Background: Erik was an accident from birth. Born to a wealthy and shallow mother, his father dead shortly before his birth, the first thing he knew was a mask and the contempt of the world. He found his gifts early, composing, drawing, singing, making what seemed to be magic, and though the village priest did his best to show him the path to God, Erik rejected the seemingly uncompassionate deity later in life. Locked away in his mother's house, Erik's only escape came when the villagers, ignorant peasant-folk that they were, attempted to take his own life. He slipped away into the night, and into legend. He studied magic and herbalism with the Roma people in the south of France, architecture in Rome, music in Russia, death and torture in Persia. Finally, it was the construction of the Paris Opera that drew him home and brought what seemed his destiny to him. Working secretly with Charles Garnier, Erik created the Opera, as well as his lair beneath, able to withstand even the Franco-Prussian War. Solitary and skilled, he turned his attentions to the managers of the building, becoming the Opera's Phantom and reciving a healthy wage for his services. Yet the new managers seem reluctant to go with his demands, and Erik's rage is never far from the surface.

            4. Lorraine de le Val de Loire
              Age: 19
Hair/Eyes: Dark chocolate ringlets that are usually very messy/large dark eyes
              Height/Weight: 5'7"/ 120 lbs.
Position: horse trainer in the Paris Opera House who sings mezzo-soprano, aspires to sing in the company one day
Background: A true diamond in the rough. She has never seen either of her parents. She grew up in the Loire Valley under the care of a distant relative. Her childhood was very lonely, spent on her foster parents' farm. So lacking of friends and a real family, she was often found in the stables with the horses or singing small melodies she had been taught in church. When she was five she began to sneak out of the house to sleep in the hay loft where she could be close to her horses. There in that loft she discovered a very old violin of Italian design and a trunk full of sheet music. Her talents came naturally and instinctively. Music was in her blood, as was her connection to animals. At age 14 she left for Paris to channel her talents toward larger goals and begin formal training in music. The academies and arts schools turned her down at once when they saw her rustic outward appearances, and the small sum of money she had managed to save ran out quicker than expected. Big cities can be very hard on sweet country girls. Long story short she was employed as a horse trainer in the Paris Opera House after 5 years of hunger and poverty. She is extremely intelligent and streetwise. She has worked very hard to get where she is today and can be very defensive. Her outward appearance is very messy but she cleans up very well and is very beautiful. She often stands alone on the stage when no one is there and pretends she is a famous diva, singing various aria in her clear and pure mezzo voice.

            5. Portia Moreau
              Age: 19
              Height: 5'3"
Hair/Eyes: Brilliant Auburn Red, long and curly/light blue.
Postion: (I'm planning on starting with my character applying for a postion in the orchestra)
Personality: Portia is shy, dedicated and hard working. However she has a habit of speaking her mind without thinking of the concequences. Background: Portia was born to a wealthy French family. At an early age she developed a passion for music. But her parents believed that young ladies should only sing, Portia however was passionate about every instrument she could get her hands on. Her parents refused her requests for music lessons, unless they were vocal. So she endured vocal lessons, but would beg her instructor to give her instrumental lessons, which he would do on odd occaisions. Eventually her parent's discovered this and cut her off from the music world completely. By the time she was 13 she was planning to leave home. From that time till she was 16 she saved every franc she could in a secret bank account. Soon after her 16th birthday she left home. Using the money she had saved she moved into a womans boarding house and worked tirelessly at numerous jobs and began taking music lessons again. She spent the following years mastering most orchestral instruments. One of her instructors urged her to apply for a position at the Paris Opera. With much encouragement she beleives she is ready to apply.

            6. Darius Larrimore
              Age: 23
Physical Appearance: He is a tall, dark-haired, lean, and muscular man who is rarely seen wearing anything a tuxedo with a black rose in his lapel. Position: Violinist/Pianist in the opera's orchestra
Background: He was born and raised in Paris where he's lived all of his life. He was never a good student, paying more attention to the arts and...female classmates than academics. He falls in love quickly and often. In fact, the only reason he took the job in the orchestra was to get closer to Meg Giry, the dainty young ballerina. He tries to act like "Don Juan" himself, using fancy words never seem to make sense. For example, he tends to mix up words in sentences "I say Madame, I have had an adulterate to your image for quite some time." Instead of: "I say Madame, I have had an adulation to your image for quite sometime." These mishaps often send him home with a sore cheek. Needless to say, he is a true gentleman at heart. Maybe if he had paid more attention in school wouldn't have to try so hard.
