Stitch Placement Guide

Trace the wooden heart shape onto the fabric. Do not cut it out yet...put it in a small embroidery hoop if you desire. In the marked area, work the 3 Spider Web roses, the 3 French Knots and the two Lazy Daisy leaves as shown in the stitch placement guide above.

SPIDER WEB ROSE: Using multiple strands of matching thread, make 5 straight stitches to form a wheel of 5 spokes. This forms the base of the rose.

Insert the ribbon from the back to the front at the center of the spokes. Weave the ribbon over one spoke and under the next, forming a spiral. Do not go through the fabric, but go between the spoke and the fabric to weave the ribbon. Continue to weave until the rose fills out the spokes. Go back down through the fabric near the last weave to end the rose.

FRENCH KNOT: bring the needle up through the fabric and wrap the ribbon around the needle. Pull the loose ribbon taught against the needle tip, and go down through the fabric in the same place where you brought it up.

LAZY DAISY STITCH: Bring the needle up at point A, and go back down into the fabric at A but do not pull the ribbon taut. Carefully pull the excess ribbon to the back until the loop is the right length. Bring the needle up into the center of the loop where you want your leaf to end. Pull up the slack in the loop, then reinsert the needle outside the loop and into the fabric again.

ASSEMBLY:
-Cut a piece of quilt batting exactly the same size as the heart and glue it into place over the heart.
-Center the stitched piece over the heart and batting.
-Trim the edges to 1/4" beyond the edges of the wooden piece and clip the curves.
-Fold the seam allowance to the back of the heart and glue into place.
-Cut another piece of fabric about 1/8" smaller than the wooden heart and glue it over the back of the heart to hide the exposed fabric from the stitched piece.
-Glue a pin back or a button cover to the back side of the heart.
-Glue or sew a string of beads or pearls around the outside edge of the heart.
