(1870-1966)

Parrish was the creator of images that all of America loved in the 1920s, it was calculated that about one in every four households have had his make-believe hanging on its walls. He used pure colors straight from the tubes. He photographed his models in costumes then laid them out on his canvas. He meticulously painted his compositions, painstakingly varnishing each layer of color, giving the end product a luminescence, blended into a fantasy world never seen before or since. He was a modest and unassuming celebrity in his own time, and unlike most artists he lived a full and rich life

.PARRISH'S THOUGHTS ON ART

"My theory is that you should not use all objects in nature, trees, hills, skies, rivers and all, just as stage properties... on which to hang your idea... you cannot sit down and paint such things; they are not there or do not last but for a moment. Realism of impression, the mood of the moment, yes, but not the realism of things. The colored photograph can do that better"
