Being the son of a painter, Pablo Picasso, (formerly known as Jose Ruiz Blasco) took his mothers name when painting, Picasso, at the age of 20. His art took him from the muted nostalgia of his figure paintings during the Blue Period; to the figures inspired by primitive cultures, known as the Rose Period, to his Cubism style. He eventually became known as the father of modern art. In the 1920s Picasso participated in a revival of classicsm to an interest in Surrealism. But in 1930 he returned to Cubism for his great mural against Franco fascist insurrection, called Guernica (1937). After world war 2 Picasso settled in France where he produced an innumerable amount of art works which left a great mark on the evolution of 20th century art.
PICASSO'S THOUGHTS ON ART
(c 1948) " It is useful for an artist to know all the forms of art which have preceeded him. But he must be very careful not to look for models. As soon as one artist takes another as a model, he is lost. Why should I copy this owl, this sea urchin? Why should I try to imitate nature? I might just as well try to trace a perfect circle. What I have to do is utilize as best I can the ideas which objects suggest to me, connect, fust, and color in my way the shadows they cast within me, iluminate them from the inside. And since of necessity my vision is quite different from that of the next man, my painting will interpret things in an entirely different manner even though it makes use of the same elements."
(c 1963) "Braque always said that the thing that counts, in painting is the intention of the artist, and it is true. What counts is what one wants to do, and not what one does. That's what's important. In the end what was important is what one wanted to do, the intention one had."
(c 1963) "Everything can be explained scientifically today, except Art. You can go to the moon or walk under the sea, or anything else you like, but painting remains painting because it eludes such investigation. It remains there like a question. And it alone gives the answer."
