It was so unusual
When your Dad came home that day
To tell me of a little girl
Who needed a place to stay

He asked if I would meet you
And if we could take you in
I said that I would love to
As I watched his crooked grin

I met you that evening
My heart melted at the sight
Of a chubby cheeked little girl
And I knew that it was right

To take a frightened little girl
And raise her as my own
To teach her everything I could
Until she was finally grown

From learning ABC’s and 123’s
I was there to watch you grow
Broken hearts and bandaged knees
To having a child of your own

Sometimes it seems like yesterday
Sometimes forever ago
Now it’s your turn
To watch your little one grow

To grow from a little boy
With chubby cheeked smiles
Into a man so strong
With his own style

So cherish today while he’s small
Love him with all your heart
Tomorrow will come all too soon
When from the nest he will depart

You’ll remember ABC’s and 123’s
Being there to watch him grow
Broken hearts and bandaged knees
God, where has the time flown
