Assimination of diverse races has made Bangladesh a confluence of civilization. Its rich heritage is rooted deep into its soil reflecting it in its art, architecture, dance music, and painting. The earliest available specimen of Bengali literature is about a thousand years old. During the mediaeval period, Bengali Literature developed considerably with the patronage of Muslim rulers. Chandi Das, Daulat Kazi and Alaol are some of the famous poets of the period. The era of modern Bengali Literature began in the late nineteenth century. Bishwa Kabi Rabindranath Tagore, Bidrohi Kabi (Rebel Poet) Kazi Nazrul Islam, Michael Madhusudan Datta, Sarat Chandra Chattpadhyai, Bankim Chandra, Mir Mosharraf Hossain and Kazi Abdul Wadud are the pioneers of modern Bengali Literature. Jasimuddin was the true portrayer of rural life with its joys and sorrows, pains and pathos and also romance earning for him the name of Palli Kabi (Rural Poet). Bengali Litarature has also been enriched with the unique creative ability of writers, poets and litteratures like Shamsur Rahman, Shawkat Osman, Hasan Hafijur Rahman, Ahsan Habib, Sufia Kamal, Syed Shamsul Haque, Rahat Khan, Nirmelendu Goon, Humayun Ahmed , Helal Hafiz, Selina Hossain, Muhommad Jafar Iqbal, Moinul Ahsan Saber, Imdadul Haque Milon and others. Bangladesh has a rich tradition of Art. Specimens of ancient terracota and pottery show remarkable artistry. Modern painting was pioneered by artists like Shilpacharjo Zainul Abedin, Qamrul Hasan, Anwarul Haque, Shafiuddin Ahmed, Shafiqul Amin, Rashid Choudhury, S M Sultan. Mohammed Kibria, Quiyum chowdhury, Hashem Khan, Shahabuddin, Murtaza Bashir, Novera Ahmed, R Nabi are among the present day artists of international repute. Zainul Abedin earned international acclaim for his stunning sketches depicting the ravages of Bengal's worst famine in 1943. Music in Bangladesh is mainly divided into three categories --folk, modern, and classical. Folk music has tremendous appeal to people as it emanates from the soil and its tune touches the heart of the people. Abbas Uddin Ahmed and Abdul Alim were the most celebrated folk singers. Modern song is popular among the youths in the urban areas and the classical music has a unique history in this part of the world and also a special class of fans. Dance of classical forms of the subcontinent occupy a dominant position in Bangladeshi dance. |
