Mass Media in Bangladesh is totally state-owned except the Press. At present there are more than one thousand newspapers and periodicals including 286 dailies in the country with a total circulation of over 2 million. Both Bangla and English language dailies and periodicals are read widely. Among the local news agencies there are United News of Bangladesh (UNB), state-owned Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), and Press Information Department (PID) of the Government. Through its 10 regional stations throughout the country state-owned Bangladesh Betar (Radio), operating under National Broadcasting Authority, broadcasts more than 100 hours of program everyday. Betar's external service is beamed towards Europe, Middle East, India, Pakistan and Nepal in 7 languages. Bangladesh Television (BTV) is also telecasts programs all over the country under National Broadcasting Authority from its Dhaka and Chittagong stations and 11 relay stations. As per the govt. policy of free flow of information, free use of dish antenna is allowed for receiving foreign television programs via satellite. Two private satellite TV stations--Channel I & Ekushey TV are now telecasting in Bangladesh. |
