STRINE

I suppose you may be wondering what the hell STRINE is? Its actually the official language of Australians. You thought we all spoke English eh? Well you could be forgiven for thinking that. But most people who have come to visit us know that it isn't really English that we speak. We talk Auspeak. Or Strine !! (say Australian over and over and over again really quickly… see what you come up with!!)

There are some great pages that link into Strine, including the Strine-O-Matic a great translator. You can even check out the Strine Hater on a culture cringe. There's some more links at the end of this page.

Otherwise here are a few of my favourites.

Arvo: afternoon "you coming over this arvo?"

Bloke: male Aussie "He's a great bloke"

Bludger: A derogative term for a lazy person. "Ya stupid bludger"

Sheila: What Ausmales name us females. Sometimes they call each other this too. "Where's ya sheila?"… "You're acting like a real sheila, mate"

Skite: someone who brags heaps or boasts. "What a skite!"

Straya: Where Stralians live
