I'm a big fan of Mr.Shirow's work:
Specially I like his Appleseed stories. Other famous Masamune Shirow mangas are
Dominion - Tank Police, Orion and Ghost in the Shell. Appleseed, Dominion and Ghost
in the Shell have founded their way into anime (but I think they're way better as
manga). My favourite of these animes are Appleseed and Dominion Crusher Police.
His work in manga is instantly recognisable from the style of characters and its
great detail, not only in the drawings themselves but in the objects which populate
his worlds. Shirow's complex worlds in mangas are very carefully planned with history,
technology and all sorts of little things that make 'em seem so realistic. Most of
Shirow's mangas are cyberpunk with all hi-technology, cyborgs, neural connections
and all. In Shirow's mangas many characters from different series make appearances
(either in minor roles or as cameos) in others. Dr. Matthews appears as a character
in Black Magic Mario M-66 and also in Ghost in the Shell; Annapuna and Unipuma also
appear (more briefly) in Ghost in the Shell, etc.
