Coyolxauhqui

Coyolxauhqui means "Lady Golden Bells". She was the daughter of Coatlicue, the Earth Mother. She is one aspect of the moon, according to the Aztecs.

According to legend, Coyolxauhqui was slain by Huitzilopochtli as he lept from Coatlicue's womb in defense of his mother. When Huitzilopochtli heard his mother complain of all the killing, he tried to distract her from the killing by decapitating Coyolxauhqui and throwing her head up in the sky. While this may or may not have distracted his mother, this did form the moon.
