   The Middle Path

It doesn't get any harder than this.

You've got Ahroun constantly looking for a fight with just about anyone, Ragabash causing trouble that might lead to one, and your Theurge off in never-never land. Somebody has to hold this all together, and that's the Philodox. Sound like a daunting task? Well, it is. The Garou Nation respects passionate fury as much as it does honor, but often, the two can not coexist. If that's not enough, thenconsider the fact that these irascible creatures must also work together as closely as a family if they are to survive. Somebody has to help make this all happen and hold things together. The Philodox, in essence, are the glue of the Garou Nation.

  Honor

Philodox walk the middle path, and the Garou equivocate that path with honor. Honor stands above Glory and Wisdom, for it is the only renown path that is not dependentupon innate talent and therefore can overcome them with less talent. An innately intelligent Theurge can outwit everyone or a powerful Ahroun can pummel you, but that won't bring you others' trust.

Honor, however, is dependent upon nothing but doing what is just. No genetic gift influences who the most honorable person is. Rather, it is a personal choice. A Fianna Philodox may not be able to decipher the secret motivations of the Shadow Lord Galliard or a Silver Fang Ragabash, but he will resolve their conflict based upon what he thinks is just. To the Garou, justice means everything. When individual talents obscure the truth, justice makes facts clear. Some may question whether a Philodox has made the correct decision, they will rarely question whether he has made a just decision. In a world full of fewer and fewer blacks and whites and so many more grays, this becomes all-important. Justice is why Honor matters.

   Wisdom

Yet, the fact that other Garou may question the wisdom of a Philodox's decision can not be ignored. While honor stands highest among them, wisdom is a close second. After all, one must eliminate any doubt among one's peers if they are to truly trust you to make the all-important decisions. A Philodox without wisdom may have a warpediew of honor. While the Philodox's intentions may be virtuous, his reasoning may be flawed, thus resulting in a poor decision.

Now, does this contradict the previous statement, which said that Honor is more important to a Philodox than wisdom? Not quite. Simply, Honor and wisdom usually go hand-in-hand, which is why Wisdom is a close second in terms of Philodox renown. The delineation of the two, however, remains clear.

For example, let's assume that a Philodox is mediating a dispute among two Garou. The basic premise of a judge is that others must trust him to do what is right -- hence,  Honor. To do what is right, he must be sharp enough to recognize and comprehend what is right -- hence, Wisdom.

  Foundations

Sound complicated? Well, it should. The task of doing what is not merely just but also right is not so simple when you have to take into account the variables that Garou and all individuals bring to the table. To quote W:tA, 2nd ed., "The balance-bringer's path is a tight rope, and holding the center is often a thankless task."

Making difficult decisions won't bring you friends. With so many depending upon you, it may be harder to feel free to express your feelings and opinions. Responsibility bares down upon you with a heavy weight.

Yet, as the Philodox, you are the rock. You are the foundation of the house. If you crumble, so will all else around you. As goes the Philodox, so go the others. Much like Honor is the foundation upon which Wisdom and Glory are predicated, so are the Philodox the basis for the other auspices. The Ragabash are free to continuously test the imits; the Theurges can wander off to explore the spirit realms; the Ahroun can throw themselves into combat; and the Galliards can inspire. They can do all these things because, while they wander off in their errant directions, the Philodox will hold things together.
