Her Line, His Line, On-Line
The Situation
Rick J. in Kansas City, Mo. asks:

I am about to meet my on-line partner for the first time. How should we approach the initial meeting and what should I do to make her feel more comfortable?
Her Line, Mary's Response
Thanks for bringing this subject up. I feel there are a lot of variables that would affect the extremely important first face to face meeting. The success of the encounter is directly related to how much time you have spent getting acquainted online, on the phone, exchange of photos and other personal information. How deep did the conversation go prior to deciding to meet in person?
Bud and I were working out details of the logistics for our first meeting within days of our initial contact online. By then we had spent literally hours on the phone - learning a great deal about each other. As for making her feel more at ease - I would recommend behaving as though it is a regular blind date. At least for the first few minutes- the warm open friendship feelings that originally drew you together will reappear and at the very least you can cement an already caring relationship. Good luck...
His Line, Bud's Response
Good question Rick. I would say that the best way to approach an initial meeting is to arrange for it to be in a public place so that both you and your partner can get to know each other over a cup of coffee or lunch and decide at that time whether or not you want to spend any more time together. That way if you "hit it off" you can go on to have a good time on a conventional date and if things don't seem just right for either of you, you can shake hands and go your seperate ways without either of you feeling intimidated. As for making her feel "more comfortable", I suggest that you just be yourself. She'll either like you or she won't and it's always best to find these things out early.
