Vinings, as far as anyone can trace them back with any
certainty, originate, according to Dorthea Vining Barnes' book, "The
Vining Family" comes from a small village in the district of Somerset,
called Wincanton. Most families today in the U.S. can trace their lineage
to Robert Vining, of Wincanton, Somerset. Robert was the owner of the White
Horse Inn, which is still in existance today. His son John, emigrated to
the Weymouth Massachusetts in 1652 in Mr. Stratton's ship according to
Sweetman's History. It is believed that John had a younger brother called
William, who is probably the William listed in the Directory of the Ancestral
Heads of New England Families, by Holmes, who emigrated at a later date.
As research continues on the various lines of Vinings in the U.S.
there are other originations being discovered. Recently a Vining family
that lived in Bristol England and emigrated here has been discovered as
a completely new line. So the story isn't finished on the Vining heritage.
