I know some of you out there might not think it's a good idea to teach people how to swear in Khmer, but I just want to show how Khmer profanity is different from the English profanity.
The profanity in English tends to relate to sexual intercourse and genitial.
The Khmer profanity is somewhat strange to the Western world, if they understand the Khmer language. One might notice that Khmer profanity does not relate to sexual intercourse or genitial at all.
Khmer profanity relates to mostly to an incident or an event.
Below are commonly used profanities that I know of and that I've used ocassionaly in heavy traffic. J
As you will see, most of the profanity relates to the aftermath of the terrible Pol Pot era.
More than 2 millions Khmer people were either killed or were displaced. Fortunately, with international aids from various countries, some were speared the pains and sufferings.
Many of who have survived ran for refuge in near by countries, mostly along the Thailand's border.
During my stay at one of the refugee camps along the Thailand's border, I witnessed a very stressful group of people, many weren't sure of their faith. And many were still shaken after seeing their neighbors, friends, and families killed by the Khmer Rouge(Pol Pot's Nationalistic Army).
The refugee camps were a very tense place for all of us. People are very touchy and anything can set he/she in anger and you'll hear profanity throughout the camps.
Pretty mild, huh? It don't seem offensive these days because many Khmer people don't relate to the terms used. Well, if I hear any new profanity that are commonly used I'll created another homepage session. If you know any profanity in Khmer and would like to sare it with me and the world please email me.
