
13th April 84 : 47109 at Carlisle on a working to Glasgow.
In the last months of steam heat operation, 47109 waits to leave Carlisle for Glasgow, travelling via the "GSW"
route (Glasgow & South Western).
30th March 91 : 47121 with unofficial "Pochard" name, at Tinsley.
In common with most of the depots allocation, this loco had received an unofficial name. Most of the 47's
were named after birds, this example being christened "Pochard".
12th April 84 : 47401 "North Eastern" at Glasgow Queen Street.
The former D1500 stands at Glasgow Queen Street with an express for Aberdeen.
9th July 83 : 47402 "Gateshead" and 47411 face each other at Kings Cross.
Two "generator" 47's together at Kings Cross - 402 and 411. Both are in the bay at the end of platform one, awaiting their
next turn of duty. 47411 was a standby locomotive in case of any failures.
18th May 83 : 47444 "University of Nottingham" at Coventry.
In the early 1980's the cross country services through Coventry were hauled by either Class 47's or Class 50's. Often the
locomotive change from diesel to electric (or vice versa) was made at Coventry. In later years this was changed to happen at
Birmingahm New Street.
3rd December 82 : 47475 on a wet night at Coventry.
On a horrible cold and wet night, 47475 waits to leave with a train bound for southern England. This 47
became more famous a few years after this photo when it was painted in the same "Trans-Pennine" livery
as mark 2 stock used on the York to Liverpool services.
8th April 82 : 47478 pauses at Perth with the northbound "Clansman".
"The Clansman" in the 1980's was electric hauled from Euston to Mossend yard where it was normal for a 47/4 to
take over for the remainder of the journey to Inverness.
17th April 82 : 47507 on a cross-country working at Birmingham International.
Early example of what became Virgin XC - a blue 47 pauses at Birmingham International with a rake of
non-air conditioned mark 2's.
21st April 83 : 47513 "Severn" at Coventry.
One of the batch of GW allocated 47's that were named in the late 1970's, 47513 was a regular performer through Coventry in the 1980's.
13th August 81 : 47702 arrives at Arbroath on an Aberdeen working.
The 47/7 sub-group was created in 1979 and originally consisted of just 12 locomotives. They were used on push-pull services
in Scotland. By the mid-1980's they had all been repainted into ScotRail colours.
18th March 90 : An unidentified 47/4 meets its end in Vic Berry's scrapyard.
The end of a 47/4. Vic Berry's often used to cut loco's in half once the bogies were removed
from the body and the engine taken out. During the early 90's examples from classes 20, 25, 26, 27, 31, 33, 37,
40, 45, 46, 47 and 50 could often be seen in the yard in various states of "decomposition".
