28th May 84 : 40015 at Carlisle prior to working a charter train.
One of the early class members is seen prior to hauling an LNER Railtours charter over
the Settle and Carlisle line.
8th April 82 : 40049 waits at Dundee whilst parcels are loaded and unloaded.
In the 1970's and early 1980's Scotland was a stronghold for this class and they were used on all
manner of duties. One example, an overnight mail train, is seen here at Dundee at approximately midnight.
8th April 82 : 40050 with an Aberdeen-bound freight working at Dundee.
With the train indicator discs apparently still in use, 40050 rolls down the gradient into Dundee (Tay Bridge)
Station on a north-bound freight working.
29th July 83 : 40057 at Carlisle on a service train for Leeds.
By 1983 the use of Class 40's on passenger turns was quite rare. It was therefore quite a surprise to find
this example on my train from Carlisle to Leeds.
13th August 81 : 40062 pulls into Dundee with a train for Aberdeen.
This particular Class 40 was one of a small batch that had the connecting doors replaced by a central indicator
box. The signalbox and semaphore signals are now only a memory (as is the 40).
7th August 81 : 40101 on a southbound passenger train at Carnoustie.
When on holiday in the mid-1970's to early 1980's, Carnoustie station (between Dundee and Arbroath) was my "local".
The passenger services were in these days hauled by Class 40's or 47's. (20's, 25's, 26's, 27's and 37's were also seen
regularly, mainly on freight workings).
August 81 : 40131 on a northbound train at Dundee.
Class 40's were just as much at home working freight trains as passenger. "Splitbox" 40131 is seen here at Dundee on
a freightliner working heading for Aberdeen.
13th Sept. 97 : D335 (40135) and Class 26 D5300 on the ELR.
A Class 40 in preservation. 40135 (now in green as D335) doubleheads with a Class 26 at the ELR September diesel
gala.
7th August 81 : 40148 and 47274 on a mail train at Carnoustie.
A powerful duo on a long mail train passes over the level crossing at Carnoustie station. This signalbox still survives
mainly due to the road crossing which, until recently, still had hand-wound gates.
15th August 81 : 40154 approaches Haymarket Station.
A summer additional service is captured on film between Edinburgh Waverley and Haymarket stations with 40154 in charge.
21st April 83 : 40164 in the parcels bay at Coventry.
Possibly the years most unusual visitor to Coventry! 40164 appeared in the morning, was stabled in the parcels bay
then vanished again about lunchtime. I never found out the reason for the visit of this loco to Coventry.
