French Railways Traction

Since the opening of the Channel Tunnel I have made many more trips into France in search of railway photographs. To date I have not travelled much by rail in the country, but have spent a number of short breaks in Paris.

Probably regarded as the classic styling for French locomotives, this Class 7200 electric is seen in one of the latest liveries. Part of a much larger family of locomotives, the BB7200 are the d.c.version whilst the BB15000 are a.c. and the BB22000's are a dual voltage version.

The SNCB Class 18 electrics were based on this French railways design. Both the French and Belgian locomotives were used on international trains between Paris and Brussels prior to the commencement of the Thalys (TGV) services.

Prior to electrification of the Paris to Cherbourg line in 1996 most services were operated by Class 67000 diesels or the T2000 "Turbotrains". These units were gas turbine powered and built in the early to mid 1970's.

The instantly recognisable shape of an SNCF TGV unit. Several variants of this very successful high speed train now exist including a double-deck version. On 18th May 1990 set 325 achieved the world speed record for a train of 515.3km/h, a record which still stands today.

1st June 96 : TGV Reseau set 4538 in Thalys livery.

The first units for the Paris to Amsterdam "Thalys" service were TGV Reseau units painted in this individual livery. Later units had the new design of power car with a single cab window.
