12th August 98 : Co-Co diesel 083 at Bray.
083 at Bray

071 Class diesel No. 083 is seen at Bray, first station stop for the 13.25 Dublin Connolly to Rosslare Europort service. These 2,450hp locomotives were built by GM in 1976 at their La Grange, Illinois works in the US.
12th August 98 : 085 at Dublin Connolly on a Rosslare working.

During my visit it was noticable that the Dublin to Rosslare Europort services were all in the hands of 071 class locomotives. The trains commence from one of the through platforms at Connolly station.

141 Class no. 159 was being used as station shunter whilst the 071 class loco was on an early evening service train.
13th August 98 : 181 Class diesel 185 at Dublin Heuston.
185 at Dublin Heuston

This class of 12 locomotives dates from 1966 and, like the rest of the IE fleet, were built by GM. 185 was acting as station pilot, shunting stock.
13th August 98 : 201 "RIVER SHANNON/ABHAINN NA SIONNAINE".

Latest locomotives built for IE are the 34-strong 201 Class, introduced from 1994. These 3,200hp locomotives (very similar to the UK class 59) are used on both passenger and freight workings in both Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.
12th August 98 : 206 at Dublin Heuston in "Enterprise" livery.
206 at Dublin Heuston

Four of the class 201 locomotives (206 to 209) are supposedly dedicated for work on the cross-border services. They are being repainted in "Enterprise" livery which matches the new coaches just being introduced.
12th August 98 : 211 "RIVER SUCK/ABHAINN NA SUCA" at Dublin Heuston.
211 at Dublin Heuston

Most of the class 201 locomotives are named after Irish rivers. The nameplates are carried above the cab windows - one end in English, the other in Irish. During this visit I did notice that quite a number of locomotives had lost nameplates from at least one end/side.
12th August 98 : 219 at Dublin Connolly on De Dietrich stock.
219 on De Dietrich stock at Dublin Connolly

The latest coaches built for use in Ireland have come from France. The stock (28 coaches in all) are used on cross-border services between Dublin and Belfast. 219 is seen in Dublin with a short rake of stock.
12th August 98 : 230 at Dublin Connolly on a service to Drogheda.
230 at Dublin Connolly

230 "RIVER BANDON/ABHAINN NA BANDAN" waits to leave Connolly station with a rush-hour working to Drogheda.
13th August 98 : Arrow DMU 2605+2606 at Dublin Heuston.
2605/6 at Dublin Heuston

The beginning of the end for locomotive hauled trains in the Republic of Ireland - these Japanese built DMU's arrived in 1993. At the time of writing a further batch of DMUs were in process of construction in Spain. The unit seen here was forming a service to Kildare.
12th August 98 : A DART EMU wait time at Howth.
8318 leads a DART EMU rake at Howth

The only electrification in Ireland is in the Dublin area where a fleet of 40 2-car EMUs are used between Howth (to the north of Dublin) and Bray (to the south). DART stands for Dublin Area Rapid Transit.
