A mixed traffic class of locomotive, 5136 weighs 117 tonnes and is about the same power as a UK Class 40 diesel.
Many of Belgiums non-electrified branches still use diesel locomotives with steam heat coaches. Here 6228 waits for departure time on a train to Gent Sint Pieters.
All services from Antwerpen Centraal to Neerpelt are in the hands of Class 62's. For the bashers, changes of train at Lier and Overpelt allow for maximum mileage and least waiting at stations. 6281 is seen at Lier, bound for Antwerpen.
As 6292 runs round it's train, the shunter is busy painting the platform edge white line. Safety around moving trains in Belgium was not up to the same standard as in the UK.
Only stay on the train to Neerpelt if you want the track - otherwise you'll be there an hour...and the station is about 2km from the town! If you're chasing loco's then change at Overpelt, about two minutes before Neerpelt where you wait only 5 minutes or so for a Class 62 going in the other direction.
In early 1998, Class 62's were still being used on three routes out of Gent - to Eeklo, Ronse and Geraardsbergen. 6313 is seen here at Gent having arrived with a train from Eeklo.
A general purpose shunter, most are now used on "infrastructure" work.
An early 1960's design shunter, now mainly used for working around stations and smal yards. 9110 is seen here in one of the bay platforms at Kortrijk station.
