JEAN BAPTISTE OUDRY: The Dead Wolf, 1721

JEAN BAPTISTE OUDRY
The Dead Wolf, 1721
oil on canvas 75 x 100 in.
London, Wallace Collection

In the world of the changes, in the cyclic changes from the inner life of the vast cosmic flow, its happenings in myriads... ...there we are now only the dead wolf, there the heroic manhood is nothing now, but it will rise and it must rise over the horizon of all the palettes, dining-tables, ash trays, you see.

But then it is not the dead wolf anymore, it is not the beast anymore, it is not the beast and the ugliness, but the dazzling force, the force from the unseen heights, from the primordial.

The dead wolves now... ...but not in the coming times. I want the wild wolves to be wilder and wilder and our pets, like dogs and cats, to be useful, not only the toys.
