The Academy of Martial Arts

The Academy of Martial Arts is a family run business founded in 1991 by Chris Hurst - Sandan 3rd degree and April Hurst - Nidan 2nd degree. Since December 1998, it has been handed down and now is owned and operated by Andre and Business Administrator Cathy Fournier.

The Kingston Dojo is conviently located near mid-town Kingston offering easy access from all over town. Our schedule offers both day and evening classes for Adults and Teens, as well as a separate Children's Program. School Director Andre Fournier has studied Karate from various instructors such as the Academy's founder, Chris Hurst and Meibu-kai Canada President, Carl Wheeler - Renshi 6th degree. The Academy had the honour of receiving the visits of Master Yagi Meitatsu - Hanshi 10th degree in July 1999 and his brother Master Yagi Meitetsu Hanshi 9th degree in 1996 and 1998. This active affiliation brings you one of the most current and authentic Martial Arts available in Canada. Friendly fully qualified Adult Black Belt Instructors will guide you through your Martial Arts training and experience. Equally suitable for men, women, and children, it is an adventure of a lifetime - RIGHT HERE IN KINGSTON. Our Children's, Adults and Teen programs are run separately to better suit our students needs. Teens are allowed to attend Adult classes as well.

Meibu-kan Goju-ryu Karate-do

The style of Karate we teach is Meibu-kan Goju-ryu Karate-do. It is one of only a few authentic original styles of Karate. The Academy of Martial Arts is the only full-time Dojo in the Kingston area who's students are recognized internationally by the Yagi Family in Naha, Okinawa. The traditional time-tested Okinawa Exercises you will practice will develop a strong body, help create a calm strong spirit, and stimulate your mind. The co-operative nature of the training creates a friendly, non-militaristic atmosphere where you can learn to defend your-self safely and securely. you will also learn Meibu-kan Kobudo during Karate lessons. In translation "kobudo" means "ancient warrior's way". Meibu-kan Kobudo is the study of traditional Okinawan weapons adapted to Goju-ryu Kata.
