Shunsuke's Anime Reviews Explanation Page

So you wanna know how the thing actually works, huh? ^_^

For each anime I have reviewed, there is a table containing the relevant information you may want to know in deciding whether to rent/buy/borrow/steal the anime. Everything is organized into sections that should be easy to follow. (If they are not, please drop me a line! Comments are welcome.)

First, here's one of the tables as it appears in the review page:

Neon Genesis Evangelion 1

Genre(s): Science fiction
Action
Comedy

Language version:Dubbed
Story:4
Acting:3
Animation:4
Music:5
Fun:4

Violence

Review:

Warnings:

Now that you have had a quick glance at one, here is the data broken down into sections.

The Anime's Title:

Anime Title

The name of the anime is listed first, and where series are involved, a review is given for each video tape in the series. (The exceptions to this are collected series in one tape, such as Angel Cop: The Collection, which contains all six episodes.)

The Genre or Story Type:

Genre(s): SciFi
Horror
War
Action
Adventure
Fantasy
Romance
Drama
Comedy
Music

The Genre is the general theme of each anime title. I have given for each title the genres which best apply to that feature. Some anime may contain elements of a genre, but do not merit enough to mention it; for example, a feature may have a few comic moments but I have not listed it as a comedy.

The Quick Evaluations of Content:

Acting:1-5 (0 is N/A)
Animation:1-5

These are simple ratings for each quality of the anime, rated from one (1) to five (5) (1 being least or worst, 5 being best or most) in most cases except for a few:

The Anime's Picture Image:

A small picture of the reviewed title is provided where possible. If you read about a title you are unfamiliar with and want to rent it based on my review, you can use this to help find it.

The Level of Objectionable Material to Expect for a Title:

Levels of:

Violence:none
Nudity:mild
Sex:moderate
Profanity:extreme

With each of the four categories of violence, nudity, sex, and profanity, the colour and the words are an instant indication of what to expect; the closer to red the colour is, the more offensive the anime is likely to be. None is obvious in its meaning, but for mild, moderate, and extreme, this table explains what you could expect to hear and see in a given anime title:

 mildmoderateextreme
Violence Bugs Bunny-Road Runner type violence; no one is permanently hurt or killed physical violence, deaths, scenes of fighting decapitations, evisceration, mutilations of bodies
Nudity fan service type of pictures, close-ups of bottoms or breasts (clothed) bare breasts, very skimpy clothing, thong/g-string underwear or swimsuits full frontal nudity
Sex physical touching of a romantic nature when clothed physical touching of a romantic nature when undressed, light petting full sexual intercourse, seen or simulated
Profanity minor insults, "damn" severe insults, "bastard" foul and abusive language, expletives, George Carlin's Seven Words

Subject Matters in an Anime Feature:

Potentially offensive subject matter:

None
Horror
Supernatural
Deaths
Violence
Brutality
Nudity
Positive homosexual characters
Non-Christian Religions and Symbols

Some people may not want to see certain subjects talked about or presented in a way they do not approve of (for example, an evangelical may not tolerate a film about Shinto). The reviews contain factual reporting on what subjects are in a given anime so a person can judge for himself or herself whether the anime will offend said person's sensibilities. Most of the list is straightforward, but a few do need explaining:

Reviews and Warnings For a Given Anime Title:

A brief synopsis of the events in the anime, what to watch for and whether it is worth watching

Warnings:

Cautions about the appropriateness of the anime feature and any pitfalls to avoid or look out for

In this section are my comments on each anime title. The opinions are solely mine, so take them with a grain of salt: you may not agree with my point of view. However, if you find that we agree in opinion on several different anime, we may agree on this one; the more we have seen in common, the more useful my comments will be to you.
