The Oaths of the Knight

Chivalry was the strict code knights obeyed to be religious, honorable, and courteous.

Chivalry required that knights be brave, loyal, and just, speak only the truth, be fair to their enemies, help people in distress, protect women, and show mercy to the weak and defenseless. To never harm women or children.

The Following are the 10 Commandments of Chivalry, quoted directly from Chivalry by Leon Gautier 1989 Braken Books.

The Oath of the Knight #1.
Thou shalt believe what the Church teaches, and shalt observe its directions; The Ten Commandments, also Christ's eleventh Commandment that we love one another and that we not hold grudges, etc.

The Oath of the Knight #2.
Thou shalt defend the Church.

The Oath of the Knight #3.
Thou shalt respect all weaknesses, and shalt constitute thyself the defender of them; Women, children and the elderly are weaker and more innocent than men. You shall defend this innocence.

The Oath of the Knight #4.
Thou shalt love the country in which thou wast born.

The Oath of the Knight #5.
Thou shalt not recoil before thine enemy; You shall not be scared.

The Oath of the Knight #6.
Thou shalt make war against the Infidel (those who attack the weak and the poor) without cessation, and without mercy; This might be a bully who intimidates or threatens an innocent person, or a large corporation who preys upon innocent people for profit.

the Oath of the Knight #7.
Thou shalt perform scrupulously thy feudal duties, if they be not contrary to the laws of God.

The Oath of the Knight #8.
Thou shalt never lie, and shalt remain faithful to thy pledged word.

The Oath of the Knight #9.
Thou shalt be generous, and give largesse to everyone; A knight's political and law enforcement duties grant him good income. He must give of this to the needy.

The Oath of the Knight #10.
Thou shalt be everywhere and always the champion of the Right and the Good against Injustice and Evil.

One little-known Knightly Oath
A knight could not stand by and allow a woman or child to be harmed, under penalty of death. In other words, say a knight was travelling through the forest on horseback with his men. He passes by a drunk man sexually assaulting a woman - hitting her and tearing her clothes as she screams for help. It is the knight's duty to stop the attack and place the man under arrest. If the knight were to ignore the cries for help and continue on, the knight himself could later be put to death under this code.

Knights had to have good morals and abided by strict codes of conduct. In return for this service, they were granted a very nice income, land, weapons, armor and soldiers.

This was the code of the true medieval knight.
