APriceofFreedom

The Friend

You are my friend
At least you were
Are you still now?
Sometimes I wonder

I knew you when we were young
Together we played and grew
Do you remember?
My mind echoes memories

Side by side in school we sat
Chewing on pencils and eraser tips
Did you like me then?
I never knew

You were always the popular one
My friends were only half of yours
Do you suppose I resented that?
But still I knew you were my friend

Always you said you wished you were I
Though I wished I were you
Were you ever in doubt?
I always was

I grew wiser
So did you
Did you keep your friendship vow?
Neither did I

Ah Friend! The times with you Ill remember
Every day was a new experience
Will you forget me?
You already have
