PAMELA SHEER NEWSOM
My name is Pamela Sheer Newsom. I am almost 50 years of age, and I am enjoying
myself for the first time in my life. I am doing something that I never dreamed
I could do....and that is to write! I am currently separated, and soon to be
divorced after a 30 year marriage. I have one daughter, Beth and two grand-
children, Beatrice and Jon. I was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. I attended
Chamberlain High School, and upon graduating, I became an employee of GTE of
Florida for over 24 years.
One day, one of my aunts said to me, "Pam, have you ever tried writing?". She
always loved my letters to her. I wondered if it was possible that I might be
able to write. I thought about it some, and then dismissed it. I was so busy
taking care of my family and working, I didn't have time! Suddenly, I was at a
point in my life where I did have some idle time, and through much coaxing from
a very special man in my life, I began to write some poetry. My first attempt
was pathetic, of course, it was a love poem directed to him. He said to me,
"I know you can do better than this, I want you to write something for the world
to read, not just for me." With my feelings a little bit crushed but, still in
tact...I got up the very next morning and wrote a poem that has touched many
people deeply. It was about my parents, both of whom are deceased now, and
their love for one another. I then became brave because of all the positive
reactions I had received, and I entered the poem into a contest. I did not win
any prizes but, the poem was printed in an anthology titled,
"Traces of Yesterday".
I have since entered many contests, still no blue ribbons but, I am hopeful. I
do have a certificate, and an Editor's Choice Award presented by The National
Library of Poetry hanging on my wall. I also received a letter from the National
Library of Poetry, recently, requesting a new poem to be published in a book
titled, "Outstanding Poets of 1998" and on April 14, 1998, I was nominated into
The International Poetry Hall of Fame. To date, I have written over eighty
poems, two short stories, and I am currently attempting to write a novel
(fiction). I have been writing just short of a year now. I can only say to
someone who thinks they might be able to write, do it...it's the best feeling
to see your words in print, and also to hear that your words helped someone in
some way. For me, it's therapeutic, stress-reducing, and oh so rewarding. The
only drawback for me is, now there are not enough hours in a day to write. My
mind automatically begins to fill with rhyming words or thoughts over everything
I see, hear about, or experience...it seems there is a poem to be written all
the time.
In conclusion, if you wonder what the letters "icfyhbims" stand for in my
copyright, it means "I can feel your heart beating in my soul".
Ahhh, forever the romantic!
