“Waiting,” Ho Hung Wong, 27 x 26 inches
The traditional symbolism for the toad can be interpreted differently. The toad is one of the Five Poisons, but is also an attribute of Liu Hai, a Taoist immortal. The magical three-legged toad serves as the immortal’s vehicle, and together, they become symbolic of wealth. The lotus flower can become an element of harmony and purity. Both of these emblems could be construed in a traditional or a contemporary way. In any case, the aesthetic value of this painting is especially pleasing.
