The namesake for roofbeam
Magazine, Raise
High the Roofbeam, Carpenters and Seymour and Introduction is
the best insight into Salinger's beloved Glass family and its central member,
Seymour. We also recommend these Salinger Books: The
Catcher in the Rye, Nine
Stories, Franny
and Zooey and, if it is ever published, the long awaited Hapworth
16, 1924.
Featuring J.D. Salinger himself as a main character,
Kinsella spins baseball as backdrop and metaphor, and, like Bernard Malamud's
The
Natural, uses the game to tell us a little something more about
who we are and what we need. In addition to Shoeless Joe,
we also recommend The
Iowa Baseball Confederacy and Go
the Distance : Baseball Stories.
In the States, Nick Hornby is best know as the
author of High
Fidelity and About
a Boy, two wickedly funny novels about being thirtysomething
and going nowhere fast. In Britain he is revered for his status as a fanatical
football writer (sorry, fanatical soccer writer), owing to Fever
Pitch--which is both an autobiography and a footballing Bible
rolled into one.
Pam Houston's wickedly funny collection of short stories, follows several women's desires
for the same man, err type of man, -- a cowboy who has shared more intimacies
with the stuffed mule deer on his wall than he ever will with a woman. Cowboy's
Are My Weakness, offers and empathetic veiw of women who neither
deserve nor desire our sympathy. For another great collection check out
Aimee Bender's The
Girl in the Flammable Skirt.
Finally, we offer you one of the favorite
authors of staff. instead of seeing the half-hearted
film adaptation, just read Joh Irving's A
Prayer for Owen Meany. Irving fans will find much that is familiar:
the New England prep-school-town setting, symbolicamputations of man and
beast, the Garp-like
unknown father of the narrator. Like Hotel
New Hapshire before it and the more recent A
Widow for One Year, Irving combines tragedy and comedy like
no other author today.
We will add and new works to this list as
we find works that we feel you should read. Check back soon.
