MISTIERS: Bill Livingston (editor), Matt Blackwell, and Kevin Gowen's (additional riffs by The Great Popalino) TITLE: "The Walls of Jellico" by Stephen Ratliff CHARACTERS: Mike, Tom, Crow, Gypsy, Pearl, Bobo, Observer. Special Guest Stars: Ortega & Lt. Henry Jellico SUMMARY: Stephen tries to show that Marrissa can be fallable. As it turns out, the fallable one is Lt. Henry Jellico, who opposes Marrissa's reign, and as a result, turns out to be a lying, arrogant, cold-blooded louse who gets his people killed. For no apparent reason, the story ends at a horse race. Marrissa and Jay kiss, and everything's better. SHORTS: [none] CATAGORIES: TNG, SR HOST SEGMENTS: OPENER - Crow decides the life of a football fan is the life for him. Sadly, his decision is ill-considered. FIRST - Pearl & the Gang are headed to the racetrack for the weekend, and she's left Ortega in charge. Ortega sends 'em the fanfic, but the SOL crew don't blame him (he's so lovable and witty and all} MIDDLE - Tom holds a memorial service is held for the late, gender-neutral Ensign Brown. Memories are manufactured, and all present sing a rousing chorus of "Gloriosky, Stephen Ratliff". END - Crow rails against the fact that Marrissa has escaped unscathed yet again. Henry Jellico shows up to proclaim his innocence, but folds like a house of cards when Mike gestures at him. After a botched transport, Pearl & her brood return home covered in mechanical spiders. STINGER - Something about the determined vestige of the fourteen year old Lieutenant reflected the doom that Jellico felt back onto his soul. REFLECTIONS: When one thinks of the elements which make up a typical Trek story - good or bad, filmed or written, TOS or Voyager - one generally has to go pretty far down the list to find "horse racing" there - it's usually between "Gorditas" and "wool socks". Yet Stephen is developing this into an ongoing theme, both here and in "All the Kings Horses", not to mention his "Triple Crown" short short story series ("Kentucky Derby", "Belmont" & "Preakness"). Am I complaining? Not at all. It's unusual, sure, but all things considered, I'd rather have a Trek horse opera than, say, "Sightings", or "The Net" (TV show or movie), or "The Daily Show". So more power to you, Stephen - and to the Federation's new flagship, the U.S.S. "Feitlebaum" (and I got that spelling direct from a Spike Jones website, so I consider it the correct one". CHRONOLOGICAL NOTES: Season 9 RECOMMENDED READING: "All the King's Horses" (not essential, but it will help - and it's funny, too)
