As a young woman, Mitchel underwent a shamanic initiation. She acquired the powers of her grandmother by, upon the old woman's instructions, burying her body to the ground with the head exposed and plucking out her right eye. She put the old woman's eye in a box and on the seventeenth day opened it. The eye was no longer there and instead out flew seven black birds that went through her mouth and bestowed upon her the seven powers of the Shaman.
