Double Prints

This was my 11th photo project. This was one of the more difficult, darkroom wise, projects I've had to do.  In this assignment we had to print 2 pictures on 1 8x10 sheet, with black borders, and of course the 2 images had to be connected conceptually.

To print these pictures I had to:
1.   Cut out an 8x10, cardboard  frame, with two windows.
2.   Trim the cardboard cut out to make the windows.
3.   Tape the frame to a sheet of photo paper.
4.   Put the trimmed cardboard in the windows and expose the paper for 3 seconds, this makes the black trim.
5.   Place a special red filter below the enlarger lens, to keep the paper from being exposed.
6.   Center the top picture in the top window and focus.
7.   Cover the bottom window.
8.   Remove the red filter, and print the top image.
9.   Repeat steps 5-8 to print the bottom picture.
10. Run through chemicals as usual.
It may sound easy, but believe me it takes a lot of time, and a lot of trial and error to get it right.

Come OUT! (This piece won an award!)
This piece won a Silver Key in the 1999 Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition, and was also featured in their art show, in Indianapolis.

The poem in the top picture reads:
"Too Many Have
       Suffered,
To Many Have
  Died Here"
I put the poem in my closet to represent gays who are in the closet.
The Piece as whole is meant to convey my belief that it is time for gay people, like myself (that's me in the bottom picture), to come out of the closet, because our hiding creates our pain, and the ignorance that leads to homophobia.

Suicide
In the top picture the person is about to slit their wrist.
The bottom picture is meant to represent the after life, heaven, hell, whatever the viewer believes in, implying that the person did kill himself.
Devilish Boy Makes a Mess
The top picture is of my devilish nephew Thomas.
The Bottom picture is the mess he made.  :p
