Some Inf0e on P-C-S Technology

"PCS" is the brand name for sprint's network, the FCC seems to use the acronymn to define all digital mobile products (including TDMA, and GSM)

Sprint PCS has licensed the Phone.com UP.Link Server Suite, the phones "Wireless Web" feature are an implementation of an HDML browser (see below.)

Sprint uses CDMA (Carrier Division Multiple Access)technology, developed by the military.
Competes with TDMA (Time Division) and GSM

HDML Handheld Device Markup Language

HDML is a markup language developed 1996ish for HandHeld devices with limited screens.

Who DOES have HDML content?

But we're going to teach YOU how to design you're own HDML. Because girls are impressed with guys that have no tan, because they spend hours dreaming up content for the fone-accesible web-site. Nothing is sexier to a woman, nothin.

What do you need to begin. Well, develop an idea you want to create. Let's say it's a game that's rigged to see if a girl is compatible with you, you can rig the game.

Some Terminology

MobileQuests GlossaryThey really have it all

Ziff-Davis Webopedia Communication Technology

Cellular The tried and true Analog mobile fone communication methodolgy(800 MHZ), circa 1980, is being replaced by digital services.

CDMA Short for Code-Division Multiple Access, a digital cellular technology that uses spread-spectrum techniques. Unlike competing systems, such as GSM, that use time-division multiplexing (TDM), CDMA does not assign a specific frequency to each user. Instead, every channel uses the full available spectrum. Individual conversations are encoded with a pseudo-random digital sequence.

CDPD Cellular Digital Packet Data a system packaging data over cellular networks.

COLT Cell site on light truck(OBSCURE) A mobile site on a vehicle placed at a location to fill in or increase coverage

COWS Cell site on wheels(OBSCURE) man I'd like to get my hands on one of these.

DISCO II FCC proceeding on domestic-international satellite service consolidation. (Sorry to confuse you with useless facts, but I had to include this one.)

EDACS Enhanced Digital Access Communications System(OBSCURE) A private radio or specialized mobile radio network designed by Ericsson Inc.

ESN Electronic Serial NumberThink of this as the fones unique serial number coded at the manufacturer. Each time a call is placed, the ESN is automatically transmitted to the switch so the carrier can check the call's validity. The ESN differs from the Mobile Identification Number, which is the carrier's identifier for a phone in the network.

FLEX A Motorola Inc.-licensed protocol that gives carriers more capacity on their networks and faster transmission times. Also refers to the FLEX family of protocols: FLEX, InFLEXion and ReFLEX. (Flex-paging?)

Foliage attenuation(HUMOROUS) Attenuation due to signal absorption by trees or foliage. For example, 800 MHz systems are seldom deployed in forested areas. Pine needles-nearly the same length as 800 MHz antennas-can negatively affect signal reception in that band.

FHMA Frequency Hopping Multiple Access(OBSCURE) A spread-spectrum technology used in Geotek Communications Inc.'s specialized mobile radio network.

GSM Short for Global System for Mobile Communications, popular in europe one of the leading digital cellular systems. GSM uses narrowband TDMA, which allows eight simultaneous calls on the same radio frequency.

HDML Handheld Device Markup Language Text only markup language, similar to HTML, (I.e. SPRINTs "Wireless Web") One version of HDML is Unwired Planet Inc.'s UP.Link.

MIN Mobile Identification Number This is a unique ID number for the network (assigned by the access carrier)

MTSO Mobile Telephone Switching Office

NAMPS Narrowband Advanced Mobile Phone System Hybrid AMPS systems and adding functionality. Digital over analog.

NCIC National Crime Information Center What the police acess in their patrol cars over CDPD.

OTASP Over The Air Service Provisioning The ability to upgrade a fones software functionality over the airwaves, possible security issue.

PCS Personal Communications Service Second generation of cellular. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) term used to describe a set of digital cellular technologies being deployed in the U.S. PCS includes CDMA (also called IS-95), GSM, and North American TDMA (also called IS-136). These systems operate soley digital at the 1900 MHZ range.

POCSAG Post Office Code Standards Advisory Group This acronymn references a paging system "beepers." U.K. in origin.

RF Fingerprinting A process that identifies a cellular phone by the unique "fingerprint" that characterizes its signal transmission. RF fingerprinting is one process used to prevent cloning fraud, How often is this employed? What if you use the same model fone, what about a digital signal?

SIM \ SMART CARD Subscriber Identity Module Synonymous with smart card, these systems use a PIN as another security measure.

Spread spectrum Jamming-resistant and initially devised for military use, this radio transmission technology "spreads" information over greater bandwidth than necessary for interference tolerance and is now a commercial technology.

TDMA Short for Time Division Multiple Access, a technology for delivering digital wireless service using time-division multiplexing (TDM). TDMA works by dividing a radio frequency into time slots and then allocating slots to multiple calls. In this way, a single frequency can support multiple, simultaneous data channels

WAP \ WML Wireless Application Protocl \ Wireless Markup Language Similar in concept if not structure to HDML
