What's new in my happy place?

13 July 2008

Wow - a long time since I played in this back yard.  I had taken most of my site offline out of a fear of being "Googled" by folks at work.  A Facebook incident brought about a policy at the office that had rules being set up about what people put online.  Despite the pivotal point being a mention of the company by an employee on the web, I was paranoid enough to just pull my stuff to edit out my real name, which I had begin to use some time back.  While I am somewhat out at work, I do not want workmates to find what I write.  Not that I'm ashamed, but when I'm at work, I work.  I would rather not have to deal with looks, or worse...questions.  How do you answer a question like..."If Gabrielle is the pacifist of the couple, why is she so aggressive in that one scene?"

Yeah, right.  I only get those questions from folks that truly know our dynamically passionate duo.

Honestly, though, I'm slacking these days.  Real life has me a bit occupied.  I keep telling myself that one of these days, a  great book will come of it all.

First thing first - I need to learn some frikkin' discipline.

Til then...  As usual, if I goofed on any links when I put the site back up, please contact me.

I have come to the conclusion that I am a workaholic.  On top of all the other little and not-so-little projects I've got going, I've also started a blog.  Never thought I would, but you know the saying...  Never say never.

Stand-Alone Stories

I first started writing Xena fan fiction during the latter half of Season 3 (April 1998).  To be completely honest, I started because I'd really gotten into reading fan fiction and found a lot on the internet that was lacking.  Spurred on by the belief that I could do as good, if not better, I began a journey through a fandom that ended up changing the way I looked at myself and at life.  My very first story was X&G Lend a Hand.  I laugh at that one now.  I'm glad I survived that first bumbling step and kept writing.   Bardly Pursuits* The Magic of Mushrooms*

Series

Cravings of the Heart

This series was borne out of a meeting of two kindred spirits meant to trip over each other.  I met Silk online at the Xena Chat Palace and sort of butted in on her poetry improvisation.  From there, a true partnership of sorts grew.  The first two stories below were the very painless results of a smooth melding of minds.  And I'll bet she'll never be able to think of dental dams without laughing.  Silk is the original WIT (Warlord in Training) and I shall forever be the NIT (NitWit... get it?  Ah, heck, just read the stories... LOL).

The Eternal Series

These were some of the first stories I wrote.  As it seems to be a habit of mine, the second story was the first that I wrote; I wrote the first one later and added it to the beginning of the series.  I enjoy reading these every so often to convince myself that my writing did improve over time.

A Sacrifice for Love Series

All of these stories deal with the Season 3 Cliffhanger (or pit-hanger as it was), Sacrifice.  That said, they all have spoilers.  It was the summer after Season 3 that I truly became obsessed with writing Xena fan fiction.  The concept of bringing Gabrielle back sparked a lot of creativity and I had fun experimenting with different styles and concepts, including a skit and a stream of consciousness piece.

The Way of Life As I mentioned before, I have a habit of starting in the middle then backtracking to fill in the beginning.  Such was the case with this series.  The Way of the Wolf was actually one of the first stories I wrote.  I enjoyed the character of Wolf (admittedly, alter ego of sorts), so I just kept writing.  I do have continuing plans for this series.  They just keep getting pushed aside for real life.

Novelas

The Dreams of Children

This short novel is dedicated to the memory of PD Wonder, the most incredible editor with whom I've ever worked.  This was the most ambitious thing I've ever tried (and completed) to date.  I started it mostly as a challenge to myself that I could write a novel-length piece.  At the time, I had grand schemes to write professionally.  I would have to honestly say that I am most proud of this story.

Synopsis

The Dreams of Children is a novella set in an alternate Xenaverse setting. In this alternate place, Xena and Gabrielle, as well as a host of other characters from the series, grow up together in the sleepy village of Amphipolis. Xena, with a great desire to be a great warrior, leaves the village in search of her destiny. Gabrielle, through a viciously cruel twist of fate, finds herself trapped in a life she dreaded as a child.

Unable to contain the darkness within, Xena finds herself in trouble and only a powerful ally can save her. Their alliance creates the Destroyer of Nations. For years, Xena lays waste to Greece. Her name is feared and spoken only in hushed tones. Her future seems lost in bloodshed until she remembers the fair, golden bard. Realizing that she was everything Gabrielle would have fought against, she betrays her mentor. Ignoring the price on her head, she makes her way back to Amphipolis in search of forgiveness and love.

Gabrielle, in the meantime, must remain in Amphipolis. Her dreams of travel and adventure are shattered in the course of one violent night. Disowned by her family, she is taken in by Cyrene. At the inn, she falls into the daily routine of helping with the business and telling stories she hears from other bards and travelers.

When their two paths meet once more, Xena and Gabrielle are changed people. Their feelings towards each other, however, remain the same. They discover in each other's arms, the answers to all that they are seeking. However, a jealous and petty god that is determined to keep Xena in his dark embrace will test their love for each other.

Their dreams will seem as distant as the stars they wished upon when they were children. Will their love be strong enough to pull down the heavens?

Come, share the dreamscape, where nightmares and blessings are but a silken thread apart.

When I originally started this web site, it was to house my own fanfic.  Somewhere along the way, I decided to use some of my generous space so that others could have a place to share their writing.  This really didn't get off the ground, but what is here, is staying here unless the bard wishes otherwise.
