Journals of a Gay Vegan: Poetry
Not Surprised

Below is the reply I received from the webmaster of jokes2go.com after after they read the poem "Not Surprised". Their web site (and others like it) include a large selection of homophobic jokes which inspired the thoughts behind this poem.

Hi, I am jokes2go webmaster.

You have a point there -- yet if I oblige to everybody who finds a joke to be offensive and remove it I'd wind up with no jokes at all -- because, as You would probably agree, every joke is offensive in some way to somebody. You might also want to visit the ethnic jokes section which contains jokes that are no less offensive. Or you may want to check out the section with jokes about the elderly. Unfortunately this is how human beings laugh hardest, always at the expense of others. There are quite a few categories in the jokes2go archives that I would find offensive as well if I didn't realize that the joke is a joke.

Sincerely,

Yakov Spektor
jokes2go webmaster

Perhaps I'm the only one who doesn't think a joke has to be offensive to be funny. Oh well.
