Roll 'm Up is a free promotional game for Dommelsch, a Dutch beer, and as such is surprisingly good. It's small enough to be welcome on most hard drives, looks and plays like it should cost you something, and is a lovely way to while away some time. It's the first pinball game I ever tried, and it got me hooked, so that should say something about its quality.

The table is attractive, with a polished wood base, chrome highlights and of course Dommelsch beer foaming in a glass at the far end. Unlike promotional things such as those for Coca Cola and the like, the product tie-in is quite subtle; it was only recently that I realised that the table is meant to be a cafe setting, with chairs and even a piano (run the ball up the keys and it plays a scale! ). Although I have yet to work out how the trampoline fits in to this scheme...

There are no animations as such but the stylish looks mean you don't really need them. The flippers make a rather naff clicking sound, but the ball is convincing enough, with shiny and matt balls appearing alternately; the action is smooth, the ball responsive and each game allows you six balls in total, which allows for a nice long session. The music is nondescript and fades into the background after a while. There is a decent high score table and the opportunity to post high scores to the Dommelsch score table on the Web.

Other features include the game's recording your highest scoring games for you to play back later (it does this automatically) and a multi-player option of sorts - up to four players can play one at a time, ball by ball, and then see who scored highest. The game installs in the normal fashion - don't be alarmed by the initial screen of Dutch writing, this is just the usual disclaimer all games carry except they happen to have put it into Dutch to confuse people (except those of us who can read Dutch, that is!)

Roll 'm Up is an excellent pinball game, even for those amongst us - weirdos, of course - who don't really like pinball games. Plus its free - what could be a greater incentive?
