THE GLADIATORS
17 Jody Craddock
JODY Craddock moved to Sunderland from Cambridge United in July 1997 on the same day as the Stadium of Light opened.
He enjoyed a successful first season on Wearside, playing a big part as Peter Reid's men recovered from a disappointing start to turn their campaign around and make it to Wembley - only for it to end in heartbreaking fashion.
The central defender lost his place to Andy Melville a season later after picking up a minor injury but has re-established himself in the Premiership this season.
Craddock, who was spotted by Cambridge playing non-league football in the Wessex League, was voted into the Third Division's PFA team while at the Abbey Stadium.
The centre-back, who enjoyed a successful loan spell with Sheffield United last season, has made a big impression at the Stadium of Light this term alongside Emerson Thome.
FORMER England Schoolboys captain Mark Maley rejected offers from a whole host of clubs before signing for Sunderland.
The Tynesider has been capped by his country at Under-15, Under-16 and Under-18 level and made his debut for Peter Reid's side in the Worthington Cup in the 1998-99 season.
He can play at right-back or as a centre-half and is looking to push for a first-team chance at the Stadium of Light after being involved in the pre-season games.
Maley has had spells on loan at Blackpool and Northampton Town this season.
24 George McCartney
GEORGE McCartney has come onto the scene this season after making his mark in Sunderland's pre-season tour of France and Holland.
The Northern Ireland Under-21 international made his debut this season at Luton in the Worthington Cup and is a player boss Peter Reid's has high hopes for.
35 Emerson Thome
EMERSON Thome became Sunderland's record signing when he moved to the Stadium of Light from Chelsea for £4.5 million in August. The Brazilian centre-back put pen to paper on a four-year deal to become Peter Reid's sixth summer signing.
Thome got his first experience of English football with Sheffield Wednesday in 1998 and became a firm favourite with the Hillsborough crowd.
He made the switch to Chelsea in December 1999, making his debut at Southampton in the same month, but played just 22 times for the Stamford Bridge club.
The strong defender played for Benfica in Portugal for four seasons before moving to South Yorkshire.
32 Stanislav Varga
STANISLAV Varga was spotted by boss Peter Reid playing for Slovakia against Norway in a Euro 2000 warm-up game.
The big centre-back was then invited for a week's trial at Sunderland and impressed Reid sufficiently to be invited on the club's pre-season tour, where he was again impressive in a friendly against Havre AC.
Reid wasted no time pushing through an £800,000 deal for "Stan", who is quick and is very comfortable on the ball.
Varga, who has signed a four-year deal with the Black Cats, joined SK Slovan Bratislava from FC Tatran Presov in 1997. Since then he has played in both the Uefa Cup and Champions' League.
He has won nearly 50 caps for Slovakia and has captained his country.
Varga suffered a serious injury in just his second game for Sunderland but has recovered and is battling with Emerson Thome and Jody Craddock for a first-team spot.
18 Darren Williams
DARREN Williams has picked up the tag of Mr. Versatile at Sunderland after playing in six different positions during his time at the club.
The Teessider, who has been capped at B and Under-21 levels for England, was a bargain £50,000 signing from York City in October 1996.
He caught the eye in York's shock 3-1 win at Manchester United at Old Trafford in the League Cup five seasons ago.
All-action midfielder Williams started his career at Bootham Crescent after leaving his hometown club Middlesbrough and made more than 20 first-team appearances for the Minstermen before moving to Sunderland in 1996.
Peter Reid decided to sign Williams after playing alongside him in a friendly two years ago.
He has been in and out of the side in the last two seasons and has recently signed a new deal at the Stadium of Light.
