Sunderland star Willie Watson represented England at both football and cricket. He was Manager of Halifax Town from 1964 to 1966. His father managed West Rainton in the Durham League in the 1950's.

George Mulhall managed Halifax Town from 1972 to 1974. He went back more than 20 years later and took them to the top of the GM Vauxhall Conference. He was also Assistant Manager to Ian Ross at Huddersfield Town in the early 1990's.
Former Sunderland and Nottingham Forest midfielder Ian Bowyer managed Hereford United from 1987 to 1990. Former Sunderland boss Mick Buxton was Manager at Huddersfield Town from 1978 to 1986.

No fewer than 3 ex-Sunderland players have gone on to manage Leeds United. Raich Carter, Don Revie and Brian Clough.
Bryan Robson scored his first goal for Manchester United against Sunderland at Roker Park. His brother Gary made his league debut against Sunderland at Roker Park for WBA.

1973 FA cup final hero Ian Porterfield was Manager of Reading from 1989 to 1991. He also managed Rotherham United from 1979 to 1981.

Sunderland midfielder Steve Doyle left Sunderland and eventually teamed up with Rochdale Assistant Manager Mick Docherty at Spotland. Docherty had been Caretaker Manager at Roker.
On his transfer from Rotherham United to Bristol City Martin Scott became the Millers record transfer fee received when £200,000 exchanged hands.

Barry Venison was the youngest captain in League cup final history when at 20 years 7 months and 8 days he led Sunderland out at Wembley for the 1985 fixture.
