Precursor to the real thing ...

This match, which will be replayed next week, proved to be a testing encounter.

Dave, on his birthday, got us off to the best start imaginable. A 2 nil lead within 10 minutes. The first goal was from a good through ball which saw Dave use his pace and beat the keeper. The sceond goal was a from a good turn and curling shot from the top off the box. Good to see Dave back to the top of the scorers list. Hopefully the goals can be repeated next week.

John, Cedrick, Merrick, Anthony and others were playing well and it appeared a rout might be on the cards. This seemed to change as the first half went on. Virginia, who have beaten the Devies in a previous practice match, started to pass the ball around and looked like getting back into the match.

The defence scrambled well. Harry, Nick, Russell, Andy and Jimmy ensured that no shot on goal would be an easy one. Troyo, having one of his best games, was confidently stopping any shots and/or runs on goals that came his way.

Maybe the movement of players around or the amount of running in the first half or a lack of fitness showed in the second half. Virginia started were they left off and probably looked the better side, despite some good chances for the Grangers.

With about 5 minutes to go, Virginia looked like scoring when a player found his way into the six yard box, only to be denied by the courageous Eroy. With Eroy going off as a precaution, Dave pulled on the keepers shirt.

Virginia finally put a goal in near the end as the Grangers tired and left an unmarked player at the back post who headed home from close range. But time ran out for Virginia and the Grangers took the win 2 - 1.

The most pleasing thing about this match is knowing is we should have some more players available for next week. Assuming the injuries to Troyo and Albert dont keep them off the park for next week.
