For the past number of years a small, quiet, determined right back has been progressively getting better and better. A little know Irish man a few years ago, Stephen Carr has emerged as a firm fans favourite at the Lane with his darting runs, hungry tackling and his occasional stike at goal.
Nothing can match the excitement of watching Stephen Carr scamper down that right wing, knowing that something is bound to become of it.
Signed as a trainee in 1993, the young defender quickly established himself in the first team and made his senior debut for Spurs against Burnley later that year, but it has not been until the last couple of years that he has got the recognition that he deserves, never mind being noticed and undoubtly has become the most improved player in the team.
Until the 1999/200 season Carr had only scored the one goal which had came in the league cup but that was all to change. With previous managers such as Gross and Francis, Carr being allowed to get forward was almost non existent, but since the arrival of George Graham, Carr has been given permission to get forward and boy has it paid.
Indeed Carr recorded his first Premiership goal for the club against Wimbeldon early on in the 99/00 season with a rasping drive past our now goalkeeper Neill Sullivan, but if that goal was only good enough to get into Match Of The Days top ten goals of the month, his goal against Manchester United in November had to finish top by a mile as Carr produced a piece of magic that all Spurs fans will remember.
With the score on a knife edge a 2 - 1 in Spurs favor Carr picked up the ball midway inside our own half and set off on a scampering run own the right wing. What happened next was pure magic and endeared Carr to the Spurs faithful. Fully 30 yards out, Carr let fly a rasping effort that flu past Bosnich into the top corner of the net. Through the rain of that day Carr had provided the sunshine and his form was to continue like that for the rest of the season.
Carr the capped a fine season with a spectacular lob over Thomas Sorenson in the final game of the season in a 3 - 1 victory over Sunderland and was then, and rightly so awarded the player of the year for the season - a decision every Spurs fan would have made.
The Irish man then made an immediate impact at the start of this season (2000/01) with a 'cheeky' goal against Ipswish Town in a 3 - 1 victory in the opening game of the season at the Lane. (Right - Carr celebrates after his goal against Ipswich)
His final goal of note came from a low drive against Derby yet again in a 3 - 1 victory.
Even better news was to follow weeks after this game with Stephen Carr signing a new contract tying him to the club to 2005 after speculation had linked him with a move away from the Lane, but according to Carr 'I never wanted to leave Tottenham'.
So Stephen Carr, what more can you say other than he is the new God that Spurs fans worship. I believe as do many other Spurs fans that he should be given club captain if Sol Campbell does leave the club and bloody hell does he deserve it.
