There are several theories as to the origin of the nickname of THE DONS. The dictionary lists a don as 'a head, fellow or tutor of a college' and the teaching profession was closely linked with the advent of big time football in Aberdeen.

Managers

Eight teachers were among the gathering of twelve who formed the original of Aberdeen Football Club in October 1881 and this club later took over the tenancy of the ground then used as the Police Dung hill in 1889. When the ground was laid out as a football pitch the name Pittodrie Park was used for the first time, taking its name from the owner of the land, Mr Knight Erskine of Pittodrie in the Chapel of Garioch.

A true don,Mr John Clarke, lecturer in education at Aberdeen University, chaired the public meeting on March 26 1903 when it was decided that Aberdeen should amalgamate with two other city teams who were playing in the Northern League - Orion, who played at Cattofield, and Victoria United (Central Park). The new Club, Aberdeen Football Club Limited came into being on 18 April 1903.

Pittodrie Park, later to be restyled Pittodrie Stadium in the 1960's after a 100,000 facelift, became the headquarters of the new Aberdeen Football Club and the white jerseys of the old Aberdeen were also worn when the new team played Stenhousemuir in a Northern League match on 15 August 1903.

Recent Times
Of recent Aberdeen has been the Joke of Scottish football. Ever since Alex Ferguson left for Manchester United, after winning the Europian Cup Winners Cup and Super Cup, Aberdeen have gone down hill. With club unable to keep a manager for more than a season, morale is very low in the team and results prove this. Us fans think that not enough money is being spent on new players, but the board always say there is sufficiant funts for a major signing or two.

After the departure of Alex Smith, Willie Miller, Roy Aiken, Alex Miller and Paul Hegarty, AFC have gone forign and appointed Ebbe Skovdahl in 1999. Since then Aberdeen have recorded their biggest ever defeats to Rangers and Celtic for 30 years and have made their worst start to the season since the club was formed in 1903.
